What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis often conjures up images of people under a spell acting silly and performing embarrassing acts. While in movies, you may have seen someone hypnotized to do terrible things without consciously knowing. Or, hypnosis may just seem like some strange therapy in which you lose control. Despite the misconceptions, hypnosis is actually a very helpful tool in which people can significantly benefit.

Hypnosis, or hypnotherapy, is a therapeutic tool that relies on a trance state to produce change. This change may be in your thinking, emotions and/or behavior. Hypnosis relies on your imagination, focused attention and suggestibility. With the assistance of a hypnotherapist, you are guided into a trance-like state in which you are given specific suggestions to help you solve a problem. Individuals vary on the depth of trance they experience; however, most can benefit from hypnosis. You may want to overcome a phobia, reduce your stress, lessen pain, improve your mood, or enhance your sports performance. There are so many ways that hypnosis has helped people.
