Dr. Mazzei believes that everyone is capable of change, especially when empowered and supported to reach one’s goals. As a Clinical Health Psychologist, she works with individuals to relieve emotional distress, to improve well-being, and to help facilitate positive life changes. Within a collaborative relationship, she encourages individuals to take an active role in therapy and tailors treatment to meet one’s personal goals. Dr. Mazzei provides individual psychotherapy to teens and adults and marriage counseling. Additionally, she conducts psychological assessments, including substance abuse evaluations. Her treatment specialties include anxiety, depression, addiction, trauma, relationship issues and certain health conditions. She utilizes health psychology to treat the behavioral issues associated with insomnia, stress management, infertility, chronic disease, chroinc pain, eating issues and weight loss.
Dr. Mazzei’s approach to healing focuses on a biopsychosocial model, improving your brain, body and lifestyle. She integrates components of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), biofeedback, neurofeedback, hypnosis, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), lifestyle change, mindfulness based therapies, and Emotionally Focused Therapy.
Dr. Mazzei’s Credentials and Background
Dr. Mazzei received her Bachelor of Science at Northwestern University and her Master of Arts and Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the Illinois School of Professional Psychology. She completed her doctoral internship and advanced therapy practicum at Gateway Foundation, where she provided individual and group psychotherapy within a residential substance abuse treatment center. She completed additional clinical work, including diagnostic assessment, at a psychiatric nursing home and college counseling center. She has provided group therapy to patients with chronic mental and physical health issues within a psychiatric facility. Dr. Mazzei’s work on meditation and mindfulness has been published and she presented her research in suicide assessment and biofeedback treatment within a substance abuse population. From the time of her intensive graduate training years to her present professional practice, Dr. Mazzei has gained expertise working with individuals presenting with a wide range of issues in various settings.
Dr. Mazzei is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor, Certified Hypnotherapist, and a Board Certified practitioner of biofeedback from the Biofeedback Certification International Alliance. She is credentialed as a Health Service Psychologist with the National Register of Health Service Psychologists. For over eight years, she has been involved in a medical practice where she provides services in health psychology. Dr. Mazzei provides supervision and training to future psychologists.
Dr. Mazzei is a professional member of the American Psychological Association, the Illinois Psychological Association, EMDR International Association, the Association for Addiction Professionals, and the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science.
